Open Book - No Grater Evil

Today we are opening the book pages of No Grater Evil by author, Karen C. Whalen. Karen is sharing the inside scoop on her sweet, culinary cozy mystery, where between the pages you’ll find a culinary foodie, an amateur sleuth, a cozy murder mystery, and Colorado and the west.

No Grater Evil is book three in the dinner club mystery series and was published in November 10, 2017 by The Wild Rose Press.

Karen came up with the title while on a camping trip. “Olivia cuts her knuckles on a cheese grater,” Karen explained. “Who hasn’t accidently sliced their knuckles while trying to grate that last nub of cheese?”

Her membership to a dinner club for years and her love of reading cozy mysteries gave her the the inspiration for this story, which includes close-knit friendships, mountain adventures, and western settings.

The story takes place in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. “Purple mountains topped with white snow, with forests of tall lodge pole pines and spruce trees all green and lush and cedar smelling,” Karen said. “The Town of Estes Park is a quaint tourist town along the Big Thompson River and the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. Readers will enjoy the up-close beauty of Colorado’s mountains, the wide-open, robin-egg-blue skies, and the western feel of the land.”

In No Grater Evil you’ll meet Jane Marsh, a recent widow in her fifties and empty nester. “Jane strives to put youthful fun back into her life by hosting gourmet meals for her exclusive dinner club,” Karen said. “She also uses her sleuthing skills honed as a paralegal to solve murders. The hero, Dale Capricorn, is a middle-aged man. He’s handsome with thick dark hair and dimples, who owns his own business. Jane has just re-entered the dating scene and has many “odd-ball” dates, but when Dale comes into the picture he brings romance back into her life. Jane Marsh plans a reunion for her gourmet dinner club, including extraordinary meals while glamping—glamorous camping—in the Rocky Mountains. After Jane discovers the body of the campground host shot dead, the club members become the prime murder suspects. Jane must solve the crime before the second half of their plans in Estes Park are ruined.”

You’ll also meet Olivia, who is Jane’s fellow dinner club member, often snarky and bossy, yet loyal to a fault, assists Jane in snooping. Then there are the murder suspects – several angry and vengeful victims of the dead man’s reckless past.

Key elements in No Grater Evil are the strong friendships that add fun and adventure to life and are worth risking everything for, even risking your life, and the good food and wine that brings friends together. “You’ll find a sense of adventure in a western setting, plus friends who have your back,” Karen added.

But the interest doesn’t stop at the end of the story. No Grater Evil includes recipes! Included in each book are menus and ideas for readers to start a gourmet dinner club of their own.
